Why Do We Celebrate International Dog Day?

National Dog Day is celebrated every year on August 26th in order to encourage dog ownership and to celebrate the special bond between humans and their dogs. This day also aims to bring attention to the plight of homeless and neglected dogs worldwide, and to promote responsible dog ownership.

There are many reasons why National Dog Day is so important, but one of the most important is that it helps to raise awareness about the growing problem of homeless and neglected dogs. Every year, millions of dogs are abandoned or euthanized due to a lack of homes. National Dog Day helps to bring attention to this serious issue, and encourages people to adopt or foster dogs in need.

Another reason National Dog Day is so important is that it celebrates the special bond between humans and dogs. Dogs have been by our side for centuries, and they are truly man’s best friend. This day is a chance to show our appreciation for all the love and companionship they provide us with.

So why not celebrate National Dog Day this year by adopting a dog in need, or simply showing some extra affection to your furry friend? They deserve it!

Is March 23 National Dog Day?

National Puppy Day is a special day to celebrate puppies and promote their adoption. National Dog Day, on the other hand, is a day to celebrate all dogs, both young and old. So, no, National Dog Day is not on March 23rd – that’s National Puppy Day!

Man’s best friend is celebrated on National Puppy Day, which falls on March 23 every year. National Puppy Day was created in 2006 by Colleen Paige, a celebrity pet and family lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate, to celebrate the joy that puppies bring to our lives and to promote puppy adoption.

National Puppy Day is celebrated all over the world, with events taking place at animal shelters, rescues, humane societies, and pet stores. The day is also used to raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering pets, as well as responsible pet ownership.

So if you’re looking for an excuse to cuddle a puppy today, head on down to your local shelter or rescue – there are sure to be plenty of pups in need of a forever home!

  1. I have never heard of National, or International Dog Day before, so it was very interesting to come across this post to celebrate the lives of dogs. You mention that National Dog is on 26 August, but is that a global celebration, or only a specific country? But then you also mention US International Pet Day, which is 11 April.

Is there a reason why there are 2 different days, or is it that Pet Day will celebrate all pets, including dogs? Are dog allowed certain freedom on National Dog Day that restrictions would normally prevent from doing? Thank you.

    • Hi Line,

National Dog day is celebrated on the 26th August globally, while US International Pet day is something totally different and is aimed at all pets.

      Thanks,

      Mark

  2. I didn’t know there were so many days recognized for dogs and pets. I am an animal lover and ASPCA is one of the foundations I regularly donate to. I, of course, have pets of my own and I have currently started taking care of some stray cats that mysteriously showed up.

Your site has been helpful for me with my dog Drayko. He is a mix of Pit and Dalmation and very smart. He is also very jealous when we give our cats attention but he gets along with them. Even though he is already spoiled, I guess I will have to spoil him a little more on these days!

  3. In all my years of being a lover of dogs, I have never been aware of a special day for celebrating these beautiful creatures.
I had not heard of Colleen Paige before reading your post.  What a wonderfully caring person she clearly is.  It is so sad to see or learn about dogs that are neglected or abused.

I have been fortunate never actually to meet a neglected dog, but I’ve seen such neglect on Television as well as reading in news publications.

Every dog, whether big or small in size, young or elderly in years, has a loving heart and deserves to be treated with love and care.  You provide a wealth of information in your post, Mark, which I’m sure many dog owners will benefit from.

I live in New Zealand and have never been aware of National Dog Day being celebrated.  Neither have I known of any other Dog Celebration day.

New Zealand has SPCA, where wonderful work is done for both dogs and cats.  I have a daughter who is very dedicated to animals.   During her teenage years, and again in her adult life, she attended the SPCA during every weekend possible to help clean the pet cages and any other help she could provide.

So, have you been aware of a Dog Celebration Day in New Zealand, Mark?  I don’t expect that you should know, but you are so heavily and wonderfully involved in the love and care of dogs I just thought to ask you that question.

Best wishes to you Mark, and to all Dog Parents, and of course, to each and every Wonderful Dog for Happy Celebrations today and every day of every year.

National Dog Day (or more commonly known as International Dog day) is celebrated around the world on the 26th August every year, including New Zealand.
Of course my dogs get celebrated every day of the year, but just a little extra on this day 🙂

  4. Wow! I had no idea about all of these days of tribute around dogs and pets. I am definitely a dog lover. I just happened to bring my Aussie mix (who was adopted from a shelter) on an amazing hike yesterday (August 26th). So, I guess we celebrated in style! I live in Colorado, USA. In the fall, there is always a day for dogs to go swimming. It doesn’t align with National Dog Day, but I think they schedule it just before they plan to drain the pool. Look out for those events if your dog loves to go for a swim.

I’m so glad that these occasions bring awareness to the needs of homeless pets. But, in many cases, the pets rescue the human more than the human rescues the pets. We definitely benefit from their unconditional love. Thanks for the post!

  6. Thank you for your informative post. I had no idea there was a National Dog Day. I’m not surprised, though, as I have a website about cats and just learned there is a National Cat Day. Good! I believe our furry friends deserve their own special day.

Dogs can give so much love to their owners. They are definitely a force for good, creating happiness and giving unconditional love. Only our pets seem to have that gift, and we should be thankful that they give us the gift of their love. They can bring so much happiness to a lonely person, and they also give a lot to family members. Long live the small critters we call our pets or our furry family!
