The Pros & Cons – Customers Honest Reviews

  • 1 out of 5 stars Poor training methods, will cause issues – His methods do not follow scientific studies whatsoever. The dominance theory has since been disproven and using training methods can have a serious negative impact on your relationship with your dog.
  • 5 out of 5 stars can’t stop reading his books – I love his books they are very informative and interesting.
  • 5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! – I’m only halfway through this book, but have already learned so much! If you read one book to prepare for your puppy, pick this one!
  • 1 out of 5 stars Caesar Milan is not a good trainer – Caesar Milan continues to use and promote the Dominance theory despite it being disproved by the very person who proposed it.
  • 5 out of 5 stars Very informative – Love the book ! Very helpful! Great training tool!
  • 1 out of 5 stars Pick a Different Trainer – Cesar Milan’s training methods are outdated and not based on science at all. Choose a different trainer who uses positive and science based training methods. Your dog will thank you!
  • 3 out of 5 stars Perfect? In my dreams… – I love Mr. Millan. However, I hoped this pricey book would provide practical, concise steps for molding good behaviors in my puppy. Instead it was a tale of 4 puppies with some vague dog whisperer techniques sprinkled throughout. I feel a little ripped off because there’s no real practical substance, just anecdotes. I’ll be reselling the book online.
  • 5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! – This had so many sensible, solid approaches to navigating life with a new puppy. Now I’m feeling confident that when I pick up my pup next week, we’ll be in good shape to create an awesome, lifelong relationship guided by exercise, boundaries, and affection. Love Cesar!
  • 3 out of 5 stars Perfect Puppy – Not enough detail on each subject. I.e, potty training. A lot of examples of his ability to train his dogs but not enough info of what to do if/when/where. Too advanced for this novice need simple step by step.
  • 1 out of 5 starsDisappointing – Very disappointing. No fundamental info like potty training.
  • 5 out of 5 starsGreat Product – This was a gift for a first-time dog-owner from an experienced dog owner. It is a perfect addition to anyone starting or who has an existing canine family.
  • 3 out of 5 starsPerfect Puppy – Not enough detail on each subject. I.e, potty training. A lot of examples of his ability to train his dogs but not enough info of what to do if/when/where. Too advanced for this novice need simple step by step.
  • 1 out of 5 starsOutdated theories about dogs – There is so much misinformation about dogs and their behavior in that book. I couldn’t finish it.
  • 2 out of 5 starsTraining for puppies – Not what I thought it would be. I thought it would be more about training and how to do it but it seemed to be a book more about basic dog instincts.
  • 3 out of 5 starsNot for me – To much restrictions and rules. Normal people can’t be that way should’ve bought the complete idiots guide.
  • 4 out of 5 starsBack to the doghouse – Book was good however the organization of the book seemed a little bit unorganized..
  • 4 out of 5 starsGood advice – This is a well written book. I am going to listen to some of the advice and some I won’t. I hope that I won’t regret that decision.
  • 5 out of 5 starsGreat read for any dog owner – Must for puppies Some of this I have practiced but it all makes so much sense. A must read!
  • 3 out of 5 starsNot really what I expected – It was hard to read the guides because it overlaps w/ his anecdotes of his puppies.

Is This Book Any Good?

As a dog trainer myself I am always looking at other methods and learnings to perfect my craft.

Is this book on how to raise the perfect dog any good? For me yes, however I also use a lot of other training resources when training my clients dogs and my own.

In my honest opinion if you are looking for a book that is purely focused on training tips and guidelines alone, then this book may not be the right choice for you.

You might want to check an article I wrote on 51 Puppy Tricks a step by step guide if you have no experience with dogs or training.

My Final Thoughts

For me this book has been a great addition to my collection of training resources, however it is somewhat outdated being written back in 2009.

In comparison to other books on the market, and the ways training have evolved over the years Cesar unfortunately hasn’t with this publication.

In terms of performance and what my customers have gotten from using this book and the training guidelines within it is an ok book.

It will teach you some really important things to look for in your puppy as well as your older dog.

I have the audio version which for me is an easier way for me to take in his advice and I still listen to this today, because as I said earlier in this review I still find a lot of the content very good.

  1. Personally, I do not own a dog, but understand the importance of them being trained.  It’s important that they only go to the toilet in certain areas and always act friendly to visitors.  That they are taken for walks and runs which will keep them healthy.  And that they are kept clean and fed well.

I used to have cats, and played with them a lot.  However, cats are more independent and don’t require you to walk them!

Cesar Miller’s book is very interesting from what you’ve written here.  Even though some of the reviews are by people disappointed with his work.  As you look after other people’s dogs and own dogs yourself, you would be a better judge on how good the book is.   Then there’s the audio version!

    • Hi Stella,

      Thanks for your comments.

It is true that not all people have enjoyed his book and the review I have given is based not only on what I feel but also that of others as I always think that is the only way to ever do a true review.

      Thanks,

  2. Hi Mark. Thank you for very interesting article. I had already few dogs in my life, but still I feel that there is so much to learn about proper training and raising a pet. Haven’t heard before about Cesar Millan book, but looking on your post it seems as a great addition to the training process. I know Cesar is great expert, and a price of book is also reasonable. Looking forward to these advices and tips in practice.

  3. I respect Mr. Cesar Millan. And I didn’t know that the Canadian Veterinary Journal approved his book. And now hearing from you as a dog trainer that you have found a lot of value in this book is a huge point. If I would to hire you to train my dog, you would implement some of the things learned from Mr. Millan. So I would like to learn them myself too.

    • Hi Abel,

While some people have found very little value in any of Cesar’s books, as a trainer myself I find his methods and books very informative.

Thanks for taking the time to read this review.

  4. Hi Mark,

I’ve been a dog owner for decades and have always trained my own dogs with little difficulty, but I admit, I cheat.  I choose dogs who are well-suited to me and are more likely to be easily trained.  Know yourself, then pick your dog.

I have watched Mr. Milan’s shows and found them entertaining and shocking.  It really is more about training the human than it is about the dog!

I’m not surprised that many beginning dog owners don’t find the book helpful.  Once you’ve mastered something, it’s really hard to remember what it’s like to be a beginner.  Also, having a dog in a apartment is very different from having a dog on a 2 acre suburban lot.  There are a lot things to consider when training a dog, or a human.

Your review was very helpful for letting me, a non-trainer, know that I probably wouldn’t get much from it.  Thanks for saving me some money!

    • Hi Karen,

Pleased to meet another dog owner who is obviously well versed in dog training.

Your comment “Know Yourself, the pick your dog” is so true and something I tell a lot of my clients, family and friends when they have decided they are going to add a puppy or dog to their family.

I have always thought a dog is the reflection of its owner and truly believe there are no such things as dangerous breeds, just dangerous owners.

Glad I have saved you some money on a book purchase that probably wouldn’t have been of help to you.

      Thanks,

      Mark

  5. Hi. What an interesting article on raising a dog.

I understand that it is very important to conduct significant research before adopting or buying a dog. There are many myths on the web concering raising your dog properly and, from time to time, I get too confused. Thankfullym I found your page. I will save it to come back whenever I need to do so.

    Thank you!

    Best regards,
    Dominique
