51 Puppy Tricks – Training Your Puppy Review

There are so many dog training books available on the market today so it can be hard to decide on what methods work best.

This is where 51 Puppy Tricks by Kyra Sundance and author Jadie Jang sets itself apart from the rest.

What you need to decide now, is this the best guide to training your puppy?

In my 51 Puppy Tricks – Training Your Puppy Review I am going to walk you through everything you need to know about Kyra Sundance and her book 51 Puppy Tricks – Step – By – Step activities for your puppy.

Who Is 51 Puppy Tricks, Kyra?

According to Wikipededia Kyra Sundance and her Weimeraner dogs perform live acrobatic shows and have appeared at sports shows across the USA.

Before her performing career she was one of the best in active dog competitions in the USA taking away numerous titles in Obedience, Agility and Hunting.

She still works as a movie set trainer for all those aspiring doggy actors and has been on the sets of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 and My Dog Ate What.

She is also the founder of Do More With Your Dog which is the officiating body for the sport of dog tricks.

What Is 51 Puppy Tricks?

51 Puppy tricks is a very easy to read and great tool to teach your puppy the skills, behaviors and some really cool tricks through a simple to follow book of instructions and photographs.

The tips and tricks Kyra show you in the book are designed specifically for your puppies mind and body as they grow.

This book outlines the importance of the first couple of years in your new additions life and how crucial these are for their development.

The best thing about this book is that unlike so many books on the market today everything in this book can be used by any level of puppy owner and get results.

This book covers everything from beginner to the more advanced and has a chapter list that gives you the lists of tricks by skill level, something a lot of other dog training books fail to include.

How Will The Book 51 Puppy Tricks Benefit Me?

I want to ask you a quick question first.

Have you ever been out and seen that poor person out walking their dog and being dragged from pillar to post?

As a dog trainer myself I know I have may times!

Does this picture look familiar? Is this what you are now dealing with?

What this will bring to you and your puppy, and I am talking from my own personal experience in using Kyra’s puppy training book with my clients and their puppies is a very well-rounded and anxiety free dog as they grow up.

Some of the best guides in this book are as follows;

  • Lifetime Bonds – It will greatly assist in establishing a lifetime bond between you and your puppy, this is so important as it will remove you from being that person getting walked by their dog rather than the other way around.
  • Reinforcement Methods – Positive and calm reinforcement methods have always been known to be the best type of training for your puppy and this book will show you these methods
  • Anxiety Free – Anxiety free training is so important for a young puppy because a puppy that’s not anxious while training is a puppy that is willing to learn!
  • Step By Step Photos – Unlike many of the books I have purchased over the years which are about 85% text with a few pictures thrown in for good measure, this book has step by step photos of the training process. This will take the guess work out of your teaching.

What Sets This Book Apart From The Rest

Very simply it is a book that relates with beginners.

You don’t need to be someone who has had previous experience training puppies.

Many of the training books on the market today are so technically written that most people give up within the first few pages and end up trying everything from advice on the internet to grandmas special training tricks.

After reading this book what impressed me the most was that not only did it cover training, it also covered tricks.

As an experienced dog handler I need to emphasize that their is a difference between training & tricks.

Training is your basic commands like sit, come, heel, stay and responding to clickers, which are all covered in this book.

Tricks are something your dog learns outside of the training and some tricks learned is this book are;

  • Chaining – With this trick you will learn how to have your puppy getting mail from the letterbox, or a soda from the fridge.
  • Shape Behavior – Have your dog learn to open the door, or hide your eyes and a lot more.
  • Body Positions – Teach your puppy crawl, roll-over, give you kisses and a few more impressive body position tricks.
  • Coordination – Head through a tunnel, stand on a teeter board, jump through hoops and catch a flying disk.

Imagine putting all this into place with your puppy in an easy to understand well illustrated book and taking them out to the park. You will have people coming to you asking just how did you get your puppy to do all this?

Trust me from experience there is no better feeling than having a well-trained dog with a few extra tricks up their sleeve! (Well in puppy talk I mean paw!)

What Customers Are Saying – The Pros & Cons

I don’t want you to just take my word or this review as the only information on deciding if this book is going to benefit you and your puppy.

The below reviews are from real customers who have bought this book and used the advice inside 51 Puppy Tricks and can be found on Amazon and Chewy;                                                           4 out of 5 stars Easy to follow – This book is great because it’s easy to follow and you can begin using it immediately even if you haven’t read the whole thing.                                                                        The directions are straightforward and provide guidance if your dog isn’t responding as expected.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for training and for tricks  – the book covers basic commands such as sit stay leave it as well as advanced tricks such as opening and closing doors.                                        It has a lot of pictures to explain the command with tips and troubleshooting.                                                                                                                                                                                           Troubleshooting is an example of a common training challenge and how to resolve it.                                                                                                                                                                                               I wasted money on group classes. My dog listens to me better with Kyra’s training style! you may find some unnecessary commands but that is OK

5 out of 5 stars Great go to for training time! – I really appreciate how this book is organized. It has step by step pictures, text and tips to help organize what you want to teach and how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Smart puppy or great book? – While I would like to believe that my puppy is a genius, it is apparent that this book is amazing. Started training my puppy at 8 weeks. Would not have believed she could have learned these tricks so fast. Great guide for the beginner. Start your puppy on the right track early. Well worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Obedience Mostly Only a few fun tricks – The rest is basic obedience like sit, down, stay, kennel, leave it, shake, rollover… Most of this my puppy already knows. Great book for a beginner maybe, but I was hoping for more unique trick ideas.

5 out of 5 stars This fantastic book is a great investment!

I’d highly recommend this book, and any other by Kyra Sundance, for anyone who has a new puppy (or even an old dog that wants to learn new tricks!)

This book will give you easy to follow step by step instructions on how to teach your puppy basic commands like sit or more advanced tricks like roll over and put your toys away. Great investment!

Is The Book 51 Puppy Tricks Worth It?

This book originally came out in 2009, so that means it is 12 years old, however the methods used to train these tricks hasn’t changed.

The beauty of this book is that it is so simple to follow and every method Kyra uses really works.

I still use the methods in this book today and compared to a lot of other books within a similar category this wins hands down.

If you got a trainer in to teach the basics and just a few of the tricks Kyra will teach you it would cost you hundreds of dollars!

For a book that is so easy to understand and costs less than 12 bucks, Yeah I definitely think it is worth it!

My Final Thoughts

I really do understand that not everyone who gets a puppy wants them performing tricks or is really that interested in having a well-trained and obedient dog (Sad as that is, it’s also a reality) so would this book be a wise choice for them? Definitely not!

If you have gotten to here reading this review then I can assume you are not one of those people.

So if you want to start your puppy off right, or even teach an old dog new tricks I highly recommend this book.

The puppies I have trained and the owners of puppies who bought this book have found great value and gotten excellent results and with 51 Puppy Tricks I think you will to.

  1. Hello, Mark.
Wow, I remark, this article is overflowing of knowledge you’ve gathered from dog training over the years. It’s one thing to love a dog, but it’s another to enjoy being with it, and you’ll only be able to appreciate being with it once it’s completed its training to be obedient to you. As a dog lover, I understand how fascinated other dog lovers will be by the content of this post. Your blog is on my “Must Visit Websites” list.

  2. Thanks for writing a review for 51 Puppy Tricks. I saw this book sold when browsing in my favorite book store website. I thought it was better to follow the tricks from YouTube or other video platforms, but the customer’s review has been quite convincing for me. The book price is fair for the content, so I’ll buy it. Thanks

  3. What a great review. You have explained what the book is about in depth and detail. You have explained the benefits of reading this book and what sets it apart from the rest. Is the book as easy to read and follow as your article? Have you used this book in training your dog?. It certainly sounds like it. And, last question, when is it too late to start training your dog? A really good review, thanks.

    • Hi Steve,

Thanks for the comments on this review and I am glad you enjoyed it!

As a dog trainer and someone who also volunteers at a dog shelter I have a huge collection of books on dog training and honestly this is the one that I will always refer back to as it really is so simple to follow and easy to understand.

Honestly Steve, as the old saying goes, “Its Never To Late To Teach and Old Dog New Tricks and that is so true.

I have started working with dogs of all ages and in fact one I am training now is nearly 7 years old.

Thanks again for dropping by our site.

  4. Thank you for your great review of 51 Puppy Tricks. I think this would be an excellent resource for anyone new to owning puppies. Your description of the training contained in the book along with the testimonials from happy customers should be quite enough to encourage purchase of this book. There is no doubt that properly trained dogs are a pleasure to encounter. I was recently bitten by a friend’s vicious Chihuahua, obviously untrained!

    • Hi Jenni,

Firstly I just want to say, and I know its way off topic but I love your email address @whatsinthegolfbaggirls!! AS a fellow golfer I can only guess LOL.

You are spot on in regards to this book, it really is one of the best puppy training resources I have in my rather large collection of dog training material.

Ahhh the Chihuahua, a very nervous and anxious dog if not trained correctly and because of this many of them can be a little snappy, something I have dealt with a lot in my years as a trainer.

      Thanks for you comments Jenni.

  5. I don’t have a pet yet, but I have already recommended this book to few of my friends, as soon as I read your review. I will surely buy this book when I have my own puppy as it covers all the basics and is quite easy for a pet owner to understand; who doesn’t have any experience taking care of one.

    Thanks!

    Great read!

  6. I see there seems to be quite a good opinion about 51 Puppy Tricks on Amazon. The reviews over and over favor this book. But a friend that has been training dogs for about 4 – 5 years suggested me this book. He told me it has helped him a lot. That if I follow the book, it would be as if I hired him to train my dog.
